What the Public Can Expect When Having Documents Notarized The person(s) [document signer] requesting to have document(s) notarized must appear before the Notary Public • The Signer presents acceptable primary identification, e.g., driver's license, state identification card, and passport. The Notary Public assesses competency and willingness of the document signer(s). • The Notary Public records the details of the notarization, e.g. date and time of notarization, type of notarial act being performed, and description of the document, as well as obtaining the document signer's signature, in the Notary's fair register/journal. • Depending upon the type of notarization performed, the document signer acknowledges his/her willingness in signing the document or the Notary compels truthful from the document signer that the contents of the document are true. Please note that In the State of Maryland, it is permissible for the document signer to write or type his/her request/statement on paper and the Notary Public witnesses the document signer signing the request/statement. • Once the Notary Public certifies the basic facts of the notarization, he/she completes the notarial process by dating, signing, writing the notary commission expiration date, and placing a seal impression on the document.
